A Note from Yusef Islam about the Spainish Bombing

No matter who is responsible, the recent bombings in Spain are horrifying and violate the humanistic principles of the Qur'an and the Last Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

The Qur'an directly says, "The best of people in God's sight are the most pious"; if Muslim extremists have been involved, how can they justify their actions when it contradicts the very heart of Islamic Law which is to protect and safeguard people's lives, property, faith and honour?

My sincere sorrow extends to the innocent victims of this aggression on behalf of myself and millions of fellow Muslims who condemn violence, whether directed at innocent bystanders, men, women or children.

Islam teaches noble behaviour and kindness, which reflects the grand mercy of the Creator of this universe. It is said in the Qur'an that "God's Mercy encompasses all things" and the underlying principle in Islam is that no one can be held responsible for another's actions.

On top of this, if - as has been reported - the group al-Qaeda were responsible due to the previous Spanish government's support of the attack against Iraq, the ironic fact is that the majority of people in Spain, 90% of the population, were totally against the war and took to the streets and marched in their millions against it. It's a contradiction that has no equivalent or rationale in anyone's book of faith or common sense.

When the dust settles and if it is proved that Muslim underground groups were involved in this latest atrocity, then they have provided further unwarranted justification for others to continue applying the same inhumane aggression against weak and unprotected Muslims under the guise of fighting terrorism.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "Spread peace" and that is the true axiom of Islam - and it is mine.

Peace be with you
