Norway Denies Asylum, Deems Gaza "Safe"

Norway: 'Gaza, West Bank Safe Places!'
by Sameh A. Habeeb l Palestine Telegraph

A surprising decision was made by the Norwegian government lately to reject Palestinian asylum seekers. The decision and report itself seems to be paradoxical and illogic. Flagrantly and obviously, the Norwegian government says that Gaza and West Bank live in Peace thus; Palestinians don’t have the right to apply for asylum.

“Immigration has very good information about the situation in the West Bank and Gaza. Reports from, among others Country Info shows that the situation now is such that there is no basis for a general protection against the issue for this group.” Immigration Department in Norway.
Immigration Department in Norway says that it shall be an individual assessment in each case. - Asylum seekers from the West Bank and Gaza who did not complete the terms of protection or a residence permit on humanitarian grounds, will be rejected.
The Department said also, “The tightening of practice for asylum seekers from the West Bank and Gaza stateless Palestinian from the West Bank and Gaza seeking asylum in Norway will no longer be protected against the issue on a general basis, type of Labor and Social Inclusion in a press release.”

Gaza has been under siege for almost 3 years where the basics of life vanished. People don’t have basic rights of freedom and even daily food. Israel doesn’t allow thousands of goods into Gaza while the crossings are closed most of the time. Gaza’s reality is so grim especially after the War. Thousands were killed and in injured and Gaza was classified as one of the most dangerous places in the world!

According to the International Law, Palestinians still considered to be stateless. This reason, regardless of any situation on the ground could be a justification to host all Palestinian asylum seekers until they have a state where they can live peacefully like other people.

The West Bank is not far from Gaza, despite the glimpse of economic prosperity that happened lately by Palestinian government, the conditions still grim due to Israeli occupation. On daily basis, Israel storm the West Bank cities and villages were people still shot and detained, many of them are even innocents.

United States of America repeatedly and many times asked its people to avoid visiting the Gaza strip. Debra Ronca wrote on July 6th 2009, “The U.S. Department of State urges U.S. citizens to avoid the Gaza Strip completely and to remain mindful of security measures when traveling elsewhere in Israel.”

Ironically, a report issued only in June 2009, should false claims of Norwegian government. The report was published on Haartez and ranked the territories of Palestine and Israel as number 4 in terms of danger.

Proceeded only by Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq; Palestinian territories and Israel got the 4th rank worldwide. A study of the world’s most peaceful countries released Wednesday ranks Israel as fourth to last among the 144 countries ranked.   According to the Global Peace Index, an annual ranking of the world’s nations on the basis of how peaceful they are, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq are the only countries more dangerous than Palestine and Israel.

More importantly, the decision of the Norwegian government ignored the existing problems between Fatah and Hamas. Many people failed victims on both of Gaza and West Bank and this could be a reason to debunk the allegation of the government which considers Gaza and West Bank as safe places.

It gives an impression to the whole world that Palestine is free, there is no occupation and only peace is prevailing while people still starving and dying for nothing.
