MCB Joins Bishops in March Against Poverty
Leaders from the Muslim Council of Britain joined the Archbishop of Canterbury and hundreds of bishops, faith leaders and charity representatives yesterday to march pass Parliament and Downing Street in a call to senior figures to do everything they can to cut extreme global poverty by 2015.
Sir Iqbal Sacranie, former Secretary General and Chair of MCB's European and International Affairs Committee together with Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra, Chair of MCB's Interfaith Committee joined faith leaders and carried placards exhorting world leaders to ''Keep the Promise". The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, led the march and handed the Prime Minister a letter calling for world leaders to agree a timetable to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and to strengthen their partnership with faith communities to eradicate poverty. The letter also urged governments to do more to tackle climate change, warning that it is already hitting the world's poorest the hardest.
Extrapolating from Muslim tradition, Sir Iqbal Sacranie said "For Muslims humanity is like a body; discomfort or pain in any part of the body causes the whole body to suffer. Thus it is imperative that the whole of humanity is accorded the means to a dignified livelihood." He added that eradicating poverty should "be our moral and religious duty, we must all ensure that we are part of a world where no one has to live in poverty."
In 2002, the MCB together with affiliates Islamic Relief and Muslim Aid and the Department for International Development launched 'Target 2015', an awareness campaign amongst the Muslim community to halve world poverty by 2015. Since then, British Muslim charities have been setting the standard in working toward poverty reduction around the world.
