Ramadhan 2006

Another Ramadhan begins with the sighting of the moon
And some of us say that’s quite soon
All of us are still lucky to be healthy and alive alhamdulilah
Many who were here with us this time last year have departed
We mourn them and remember the happy times we spent together
Before they parted
Their memories live on and we make dua for them
But will soon fade as our mind gets filled with new memories

Many have entered this world from their mother’s womb
While many Muslims lay dead forgotten in unmarked tombs
In far away countries
Which we have never visited and never will
But still
There is a strong bond which binds us to them and their pain and grief
Its not colour, nationality or language
But the bond of Islamic brotherhood
Binding the black and white
Rich and poor

As we rise for suhoor
Many rise in the Muslim lands but have little to eat coz they are poor
While we break our fasts and complain that it’s been a long day
We forget the ones who toil in the heat daily

We have so much yet we are the most ungrateful
All we ever think about is ourselves
Me, myself and I
It seems living in the west has corrupted our sense of appreciation and concern for others
We measure according to the western criteria
And forget the words of our Lord
And fail to appreciate and thank Allah for all that we have

So may this Ramadhan be one where we stop complaining about the tiniest of things
And think more about others in distant lands
And make dua for Allah to send a saviour
To rescue them from occupation, poverty and tyrant rulers who care not for their people
Ameen
